New York: Elizabeth Withers-Mendes plays her final performance today as Shug Avery in The Color Purple. Playbill.com has learned through production spokespersons that she will not return for the musical's final two performances on February 24th as orginally announced. Scheduling conflicts prevent her from performing. Angela Robinson will perform the role until the musical's end.
The cast currently includes Zonya Love as Celie, Chaka Khan Williams as Sofia, Darlesia Cearcy as Nettie, Alton Fitzgerald White as Mister, BeBe Winans as Dixon Harpo, Krisha Marcana as Squeak, Larry Marshall as 'Ol Mister, and LaKisha Jones as Church Soloist.
The musical will play its final performance at the Broadway Theater on February 24th. The musical will have played 910 performances since opening on December 1, 2005.
The Color Purple tells the story of Celie, who endures insurmountable hardships within her own family and struggles to find her identity and love.
