New York : Broadway's Hairspray celebrates its 5th anniversary today. The musical opened at the Neil Simon Theater on August 15th, 2002 and went on to win eight 2003 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Director, and Best Actress and Actor in a Musical.
Last month the screen version of the musical, starring John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Amanda Bynes, and Nikki Blonsky opened to good reviews. As of today, the film has grossed close to $100 million and earned $27,800,000 in its opening weekend, the most for any movie musical in history.
Broadway's Hairspray currently stars Shannon Durig as Tracy Turnblad, Paul Vogt as Edna Turnblad, Alexa Vega as Penny Pingleton, Jerry Mathers as Wilbur Turnblad, Darlene Love as Motormouth Maybelle, Tevin Campbell as Seaweed J. Stubbs, Lance Bass as Corny Collins, Isabel Keating as Velma Von Tussle, Ashley Spencer as Amber Von Tussle, and Ashley Parker Angel as Link Larkin.
In Hairspray , Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion--to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity.
