The film version of the Tony winning musical Hairspray opens in theaters all across America today. Adam Shankman directs an all-star cast that has been assembled for the production including John Travolta dressing in drag as Edna Turnblad, Christopher Walken as Wilbur Turnblad, Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, Queen Latifah as Motormouth Maybelle, Amanda Bynes as Penny Pingleton, Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma Van Tussle, Brittany Show as Amber Von Tussle, Zac Efron as Link Larkin, James Marsden as Corny Collins, Elijah Kelley as Seaweed, and Allison Janey as Prudy Pingleton.
Hairspray is originally based on the 1988 John Waters comedy about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show. The new version of the film is based on New Line's hit Broadway adaptation of the film, which debuted in 2002, and went on to win eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book and Best Director.
