Germany to host retrospective of Japanese photographer Sugimoto

Dusseldorf - The biggest retrospective of works by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto that Germany has ever hosted opens in the city of Dusseldorf on Saturday. The 59-year-old photographer is showing around a dozen series out of his catalogue of works, each with a distinct theme. Sugimoto is celebrated for his multiple series of black-and-white photographs that explore the themes of time, memory, dreams, and the history of representation. Equally acclaimed for the conceptual and philosophical aspects of his work, the exhibition at the Kunstsammlung North Rhine-Westphalia in Dusseldorf concentrates on the latter. The exhibition begins on the ground floor, where visitors are greeted by a series of 13 large-format images from the Seascapes series, presented on a monumental, gently curved wall segment. The show continues in nine galleries on the two upper floors with the series Theatres and Drive-in Theatres, Portraits, Pine Trees, Colours of Shadow, Conceptual Forms (Mathematical Forms), Dioramas, Architecture, Lightning Fields and Photogenic Drawing. Sugimoto, who has lived in New York since 1974, says he values photography as a medium of reflection and contemplation.
