London : The West End production of The Drowsy Chaperone will play its final performance at the Novello Theatre on August 4th. Producer Kevin McCollum said in a statement, "We are incredibly proud of The Drowsy Chaperone, which we have seen grow from a 30 minute vignette into a multi award-winning Broadway musical. London ticket sales for our show have been slower than needed to sustain a longer run at the Novello. Whilst regrettably having made the decision to close the show we are pleased to have brought this wonderfully original new musical to the West End with a first class company who have brought to life a production we are incredibly proud of."
The cast of the musical currently includes Bob Martin as Man in Chair, Elaine Paige as The Drowsy Chaperone, Summer Strallen as Janet Van De Graaff, Nickolas Grace as Underling, Selina Chilton as Kitty, Enyonam Gbesmete as Trix, Cameron Jack as Gangster #2, John Partridge as Robert Martin, Adam Stafford as Gangster #1, Sean Kingsley as George, Joseph Alessi as Aldolpho, Nick Holder as Feldzeig, John Partridge as Robert Martin, and Anne Rogers as Mrs. Tottendale. Steve Pemberton will replace Bob Martin as Man in Chair on July 10th.
The musical features music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw. The creative team includes scenic design by David Gallo, costume design by Gregg Barnes, and lighting design by Brian Monahan.
In the production, the curtain rises on a present-day musical theatre fanatic eager to tell you about his favorite Broadway musical -- “The Drowsy Chaperone.” He’s the ultimate Everyfan and “Drowsy” is his guilty pleasure.
As he begins listening to the rare cast recording, the show cleverly and magically blooms to life, telling the hilarious tale of a pampered Broadway starlet and her debonair fiance, an overzealous producer, a dizzy chorine, the Latin lover and a couple of bumbling gangsters. Ruses are played. Hi-jinks occur. And the plot spins everyone into musical comedy euphoria.
