New York: Manhattan Theatre Club has added the world premiere of Kenneth Lonergan's The Starry Messenger to the lineup of its 2007-2008 season. The play will be directed by Longergan and will star Matthew Broderick in the lead role. Dates have not been announced, but the production will play Off-Broadway at NY City Center.
In The Starry Messenger, Mark works at the Hayden Planetarium, teaching Upper West Siders about the mysteries of the galaxy. But when this fortysomething married man meets a pretty young single mother, his own solar system begins spinning out of control, forcing him to come to terms with the inertia that is his life. Is it too late to try and re-connect with his wife and son? And how did his middling career get so badly off track?
During Broderick's extensive stage carrer he has received Tony Awards for Brighton Beach Memoirs and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and a nomination for his work in The Producers. His other theater credits include Biloxi Blues, Night Must Fall, Taller Than a Dwarf, On Valentine's Day, The Odd Couple, Torch Song Trilogy, and The Widow Claire.
Lonergan's other plays include This Is Our Youth, The Waverly Gallery, and Lobby Hero. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for the screenplay of You Can Count on Me.
