Porgy and Bess to close

London: The West End production of Porgy and Bess will play its final performance at the Savoy Theatre on May 5, 2007. The musical, which has been adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn, is looking to transfer across the Atlantic to Broadway. No details have been announced, but producers are looking at Spring 2008.

Starring as the title characters are Clarke Peters and Nicola Hughes. Joining them is Cornell White as Crown, Dawn Hope as Serena, and O.T. Fagbenle as Sportin' Life. The musical based on the opera of the same name features a book by Dubose Heyward which has been adapted by Trevor Nunn, music by George Gershwin which has been adapted by Gareth Valentine, and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and Dubose Heyward.Set in 1912 in Charleston's Catfish Row and based on the novel by DuBose Heyward, Porgy and Bess tells the story of crippled Porgy who takes in Bess after she flees her lover.For tickets to the final performances of Porgy and Bess visit our database here.In related news, the Sheffield Crucible Theatre's production of Fiddler on the Roof will be the Savoy's next tenant. Previews are set to begin on May 14th with an official opening date set for May 22nd.The revival production, directed by Lindsay Posner, starred Henry Goodman as Tevye and Beverley Klein as Golde. Fiddler on the Roof features a book by Joseph Stein, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and music by Jerry Bock. This new production features a new arrangement of Bock's score by Sophie Solomon. The creative team included design by Peter McKintosh, lighting design by Peter Mumford, and choreography by Kate Flatt. Fiddler on the Roof is an all-time music classic featuring the familiar songs If I Were a Rich Man, Tradition, Matchmaker Matchmaker and many more. Tevye, the dairyman is an old-fashioned father who wants to see his daughters married in the traditional Jewish way. But revolution is in the air and the young are guided by their hearts, not their elders. Set in Tsarist Russia in 1905, this tale of the emotional turmoil of a family facing upheaval in their lives and the world around them is a powerful and uplifting experience.
