New York : The Off-Broadway production of My Name is Rachel Corrie will now play its final performance at the Minetta Lane Theater on December 17th. The play had extended through the 30th.
"We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to bring My Name is Rachel Corrie to New York," said Dena Hammerstein, of James Hammerstein Productions. "As the play makes its way to theatres around the country and the world, Rachel's words will have the opportunity to reach an even greater audience and we couldn't be more proud of that."
Diane Borger, general manager of The Royal Court Theatre added, "It has been a full time job to handle the number of requests that have come my way to produce this play around the world, even more so following the success of the New York production. It is a testament to the power and truth of this play that inquires have come in from both Israel and Palestine. That is everything that Rachel Corrie was about."
The production has already been announced to play the Seattle Repertory Theatre from March 15, 2007 through April 22nd.
My Name is Rachel Corrie opened at the Minetta Lane Theatre on October 15th.
Bree Elrod stars as Corrie.
The production is based on the writings of Rachel Corrie, the 23 year old American woman who was killed on March 16, 2003 by an Israeli Army bulldozer while she was protesting the demolition of Palestinian homes. The circumstances surrounding her death have been disputed. The International Solidarity Movement, of which Corrie was apart, claimed that she was run over on purpose, but The Israeli Defence Forces have said it was an accident and that she was killed by falling debris.
Corrie left behind a series of diaries and emails that have been edited together by Katherine Viner and Alan Rickman, who also directs the work.
The creative team features set design by Hildegard Bechtler, lighting design by Johanna Town, and sound and video design by Emma Laxton.
