New York: Tony Danza will join the Broadway production of The Producers as Max Bialystock on December 19th. The actor will play the role through March 11th.
Also joining the production on the 19th will be Roger Bart as Leo Bloom. Bart will stay through February 11th. This stint will mark the fifth time the actor has starred in the musical. He created the role of Carmen Ghia for which he was Tony nominated and has starred as Leo Bloom four times.
Bart's other Broadway credits include You're a Good Man Charlie Brown for which he won a Tony and Drama Desk award, The Frogs, Triumph of Love, How to Suceed in Business Without Really Trying, and Big River. He has also starred as Carmen Ghia in the film version of The Producers and as George in the televison series Desperate Housewives.
The musical currently stars John Treacy Egan, Hunter Foster, Bill Nolte, Brad Musgrove, Lee Roy Reams, and Angie Schworer.
The Producers swept the 2001 Tony Awards including: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan), Best Original Score (Mel Brooks), Best Scenic Design (Robin Wagner), Best Costume Design (William Ivey Long), Best Lighting Design (Peter Kaczorowski), Best Orchestrations (Doug Besterman), Best Choreography and Best Direction of A Musical (Susan Stroman).
In The Producers, a theatre producer and his accountant hatch a sure-fire get rich scam; raise more money than they need for a Broadway flop titled Springtime for Hitler. Things go awry when the show becomes more popular than they planned.
