Melbourne museum Van Gogh is a fake say British experts

Sydney - A Vincent Van Gogh painting that for 65 years has drawn millions to a Melbourne art gallery has been declared a fake by British experts. National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) director Gerard Vaughan conceded Monday that Head of a Man would be worthless if the bulk of art historians concurred with the view of Michael Daley, director of Art Watch UK, that the NGV's prize exhibit had 'all the hallmarks of a pre-existing picture tricked up to resemble a Van Gogh.' Vaughan told national broadcaster ABC that Head of a Man, currently on loan to a gallery in Britain, would continue to be identified as painted by the Dutch master in 1886 or 1887. 'If it is a fake Van Gogh - which I dispute, by the way, but it has been claimed it is a fake Van Gogh - the piece of canvas loses nearly all value,' Vaughan said. 'Eventually, at the end of the day, you have to trust your sense of connoisseurship, I suppose, your ability to judge quality in a painting.' © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
