In The Taming of the Shrew, a man playing a boy dresses up as a girl, which confuses Christopher Sly; whilst in Twelfth Night, a man playing a girl is disguised as a boy, which confuses everybody. Padua and Illyria, illusion or reality? Does it matter? What begins as a trick played on a drunken groom in Padua ends in the bittersweet confusions of an island called Illyria. In both plays, Shakespeare asks us to reflect on the nature of happiness and true love.
