Fans of the dance can rejoice this morning as AOL’s gritty and gorgeous “city.ballet.” a stunning twelve-episode docu-series showcasing the lives of the dancers, choreographers and other artists who comprise New York City Ballet (NYCB), returns with its second season Tuesday, November 4th on AOL Originals.
The series will continue in the spirit of season one and provide footage of NYCB company classes and rehearsals and off stage segments of many of the 90+ dancers in the company, including grueling physical therapy sessions and a glimpse into their day-to-day personal lives in New York City.
“The dancers of the New York City Ballet are some of the greatest artists, and athletes, in the world, and as a former dancer and life-long fan of ballet, I am thrilled to be able to open the door to this remarkable institution to viewers of the AOL On Network,” said Parker in a previous press release. “By inviting people into this very special and rarely seen world, I hope the dancers’ own passion and dedication to ballet, one of the most demanding and difficult pursuits in all of the arts, will help to cultivate the next generation of ballet audiences.”
Set against the gritty backdrop of New York City, “city.ballet.” takes viewers behind the curtain of the country’s foremost dance company. Each installment of this one-of-a-kind series’ sophomore run offers a unique take on what it means to be part of the elite institution, from revealing the challenges of being the youngest artist on an increasingly competitive roster to exploring what it takes to overcome career-threatening injuries and examining the ways in which life changes after the spotlight has inevitably dimmed.
In addition to providing an unprecedented look at life within the company, “city.ballet.” will follow select NYCB dancers as they both thrive and struggle throughout their day-to-day lives. Among those showcased are NYCB Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins, as well as Principals SaraMearns and Chase Finlay.
All twelve episodes of “city.ballet.” will be available November 4th via http://on.aol.com/cityballet.
“city.ballet.” is executive-produced by NYCB board member Sarah Jessica Parker, Pretty Matches Productions and Zero Point Zero Production. The series is sponsored by Citi.
