Album Review: Big & Rich – ‘Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace’

Big & Rich return with their own kind of country on ‘Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace.’ The album features a more mature sound from the duo and is a bit of a departure from their debut – which kicked the country music doors open for them with the hit single “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy).”

The album has a “tamer” sound to it and is not as rowdy as some of their past efforts. Lead single “Lost in this Moment” sets the tone for the whole album – a little bit of rock mixed with ballad style lyrics. It is sure to become a favorite for weddings.

Big & Rich keep the pace steady throughout the album with a mixture of ballads (such as “Faster Than Angels Fly” and “Eternity”) and some of their classic country rock (such as “Everybody’s Rockin’” and “Radio”). The album also features some guest appearances from John Legend and Wyclef John.

However, they take a bit of a misstep with an extreme country version of the AC/DC classic “You Shook Me All Night Long.” While the tune might please some country fans, it might send some AC/DC fans (like myself) running for the hills. In their defense, their version does sound better than when Celine Dion tried to cover song, and demonstrates the band just loves to have fun playing music.

Overall, I really enjoyed ‘Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace,’ and would recommend the album to any Big & Rich fan. It is probably some of their best work, and demonstrates how the duo is continuing to grow as songwriters and develop their sound. If you have only been a fan of their radio singles, this is the album to take a chance on buying.
