BLVD ARTS calls on local artists to submit sketches based around the theme “Los Angeles” for a chance to have their mural featured along the massive wall that boarders the Studio City hillside opposite the west-facing exterior of BLVD Hotel.
“BLVD is excited to feature inspiring artists, offering them a chance to gain publicity and recognition through this competition,” concludes BLVD Managing Director Sagar Kumar. “Street art is such an integral part of the BLVDs of LA, and this offers our chance to honor and celebrate the artists who make this a uniquely Los Angeles art form.”
“While Los Angeles is well-known for its artistic murals, The city, has recently passed laws recently limiting this type of artistic expression. We are very fortunate to be working in collaboration with the BLVD hotel as this project allows a creative outlet for mural artists.” – 1881 Project
Artists can submit anything from an illustration of Sunset BLVD, to the downtown skyline, to the picturesque Santa Monica Pier. Then, BLVD will choose 8 finalists, who will each have an 8×10 foot space of the 80-foot wall to paint a larger-than-life mural of their creation.
BLVD HOTEL + SPA will host the live mural painting competition September 24th on the second level of the hotel.
The western facing wall borders the valley hillside and offers a patio backdrop to over 40 rooms in the hotel including the Hollywood BLVD suite.
The finalist murals will be the second addition to the wall, a portion of which currently features a reverse view of the infamous Hollywood sign looking down over the city by local LA artist Alex Garcia.
Artists have already begun to submit proposed pieces to BLVD’s judges and for public view.
The finalists will then paint their murals, finishing in time for judging at the artists’ reception September 24th, 2011.
The reception, which is open to the public, welcomes visitors to enjoy live music, beverages, mobile gourmet fare from LA’s finest food trucks and live creativity in action, as the finalists fire up their brushes and take to their blank wall spaces.
All finalists receive a one-night stay at the BLVD Hotel. Voting takes place on the 1881 Project’s website, www.1881project.com
BLVD will announce the winner October 17th.
The grand prize winner—chosen by public acclamation as well as by a team of judges: the 1881 Project, Collective Aesthetics and the BLVD Hotel + Spa—receives a cash prize of $1,500.
