2011 was a bit of a wimper for the more recently dominant superhero genre. The most successful – Thor, ranked 8 in the US yearly domestic box office charts raking in a respectable, but hardly outstanding $181 million. In fact, the genre failed to have a single movie in the top 10 worldwide grossing films of 2011. The likes of “X-Men: First Class, “Captain America” and “The Green Lantern” failed to reach anywhere near the box office heights of 2010’s “Iron Man 2″ or 2008’s “The Dark Knight.”
Don’t see the recent failures in the superhero world as a sign of things to come though. 2012 promises to be a year where spandex wearing heroes rise to the occasion.
